This replica of a 1968 Cooper Car Company (CCC) Group 5 race car has been masterfully assembled to pay perfect homage to one of the four legendary period CCC Mk 2 Group 5s. Built on the chassis of an authentic 1968 Mk 2, it incorporates rigorously period-correct mechanical components that firmly root it in the grand tradition of historic motorsport.

Fully documented in the Mini Cooper Register (MCR), the car has a complete file tracing its history back to the mid-1970s. The story of this replica began shortly after the closure of Downton Engineering, when engineer John Hoad gathered various mechanical components and a Mk 2 body shell, before handing the project over to Mike Feetham in 1994. Feetham significantly advanced the construction before entrusting it to Bonhams auction house in 2007, the year it was acquired by Mike Mark. Mark then meticulously completed the car's preparation for hill climbs and sprints. The highlight of this period was a remarkable demonstration driven by John Rhodes at Goodwood in 2009. It is also thanks to Mike Mark that the car was registered under the famous number GPH 1G, a strong nod to the legendary 1965 CCC registered GPH 1C.

Retaining an authentic patina that testifies to its fifty years of history and use, GPH 1G benefited from expert maintenance by Phil Anning (Anning's Race and Restoration) during its previous ownership. Extensive mechanical work was carried out, including replacement of the timing cover and primary gear seals, balancing of the flywheel, installation of a correct rear strut brace, suspension and wheel alignment, replacement of the nylon fuel lines, as well as a complete overhaul and thorough testing of the fuel injection system. Since 2021, it has been a regular and much-loved participant at the annual MCR National Mini Day gathering in Beaulieu and the BMC and Leyland Show in Gaydon.

An uncompromising mechanical configuration

Built to the strictest specifications of the 1968 Group 5 season, its technical specifications are truly impressive. The powertrain combines a 1293cc thick-flange Cooper S engine block with a rare and highly sought-after Lucas mechanical fuel injection system and an 8-port Weslake cylinder head. The engine incorporates numerous period-specific parts: a special camshaft, a dedicated fuel metering unit, relocated dynamo pulleys and tensioners, and custom throttle bodies with intake trumpets. Power is transmitted to the wheels via a straight-cut gearbox paired with a short 3.76:1 final drive ratio.

The chassis and interior display the same historical precision: they feature Hydrolastic suspension, adjustable front suspension arms and tie rods, and a rear anti-roll bar. Inside, the cockpit houses an auxiliary instrument panel, a Contour 7 driver's seat, and a John Rhodes steering wheel.

Accompanied by its voluminous historical files including all technical archives, reference documentation and period photographs, GPH 1G represents a rare opportunity: that of acquiring an absolutely faithful replica, perfectly maintained and ready to take its place in the pantheon of Group 5 touring car history.
